Information on the Process of Hydroseeding

The hydroseeding process is with a blend of:

  • Mulch
  • Seed
  • Fertilizer
  • Healthy soil additions
  • Tackifiers

This is all mixed with water in a HydroSeed machine.

Mixture

This mixture, called slurry, and then is sprayed over the ground from the tank. When this is applied to the ground, it creates a healthy growth environment for the grass seed. When the mixture dries, it forms a mat over this area, protecting the ground from erosion. The mat also guards the seeds protecting it from being eaten by birds, washed away by heavy rain, and offers the retention of moisture.

Places to seed

Hydroseeding is not limited to only new lawns or lawn repair. You can seed almost anything using a Hydroseeder. Hydroseeding services can be used in:

  • Pastures
  • Wildflowers
  • Steep hillsides

Fertilizers

Most hydroseeding companies use chemical fertilizers. But some companies have chosen to offer an all-natural organic mixture in their seeding applications. This organic fertilizer is a mixture of fish and kelp, potent micronutrient sources. Also, some add liquid bone meal providing an immediate source of natural phosphorus which is important to new lawns root development. All of this is crucial to the long-term health of a lawn as well as balanced growth helping the lawn be resistant to disease, insects as well as drought. It is also better than high maintenance chemically treated lawns.

Tackifiers

Tackifiers are used for aid in projects to control projects. They are also used in residential hydroseeding projects as an aid in controlling runoff from spring and fall storms that often occur during the establishment of the turf.

Seasons

Fall or spring is the best time to hydroseed. Summertime needs watering more frequently in hydroseeding, due to the hot weather but provides lightening quick germination. If you are seeding during the summer, a co-polymer gel product is used by many companies. This absorbs up to 400 times its weight in water and then releases it slowly, helping maintain moisture for the soil.
